10 rare cat breeds in the world
.
There are a large number of rare cat breeds and we based our list on information provided by the CFA. Each year, the CFA releases a ranked list of cat breeds that they organize by the number of registrations for the year. Usually the number of registrations corresponds to the number of kittens born this year. Lower ranks have fewer breeds, which makes these cat breeds rare. The most recent CFA list was released in early 2018 and reflects the number of registrations throughout 2017. Based on the 2017 CFA rankings, these are the rarest cat breeds in the

The Ankara Zoo bred cats with white coats and blue eyes, golden eyes or strange eyes (one golden and one blue). In 1962, the Ankara Zoo allowed the American colonel and his wife to take cats home. Thereafter, many Westerners were given Turkish Angoras and the breed was officially established in North America in the 1970s

The American Bobtail was a naturally occurring feral cat that was not selectively bred until the late 1960s. American Bobtails are known for their short tails that can be straight, slightly curved, slightly crooked, or have bumps down the length of the tail. Breeders in the USA created the Bobtail by breeding feral
domestic cats that have their signature short tails.
Their work eventually led to the emergence of the first truly American Bobtails, large in size and lively. No other breeds have ever been introduced into the American Bobtail line. American Bobtails are very healthy and are not known to have major health problems.
In general, most cat registries do not distinguish between regular Burmese and European Burmese cats, but the CFA does. All Burmese cats originated from one cat, Wong Mau, who was the first Burmese native to be brought to the United States in 1930. Wong Mau mated with Siamese and the born kittens were solid and pointed in colour. Solid-colored cats were selected for further breeding and the Burmese spread to the UK.
Since then, the United States and Europe have developed different breed standards for the Burmese, leading to discrimination. This makes European Burmese somewhat rare while American Burmese are more common

The Chartreux is a rare breed of cat from France believed to have ancient origins. It is a breed of domestic cat with a silvery blue and gray head, short hair, small to medium build, and a low percentage of body fat. Its body is almost Cuban, and unusually heavy for its size. They are a smart, playful cat that forms strong bonds with people and is very vocal, with a different voice than other breeds. A distinctive feature of the korat is its heart-shaped head and large green eyes. The front paws are shorter than the back paws.
The Chartreux is a natural breed, one of the oldest stable cat breeds, and one of the very few that has not changed its appearance over the centuries. It originated in Phimai, Thailand, and is named after its native province, Nakhon Ratchasima Province (commonly called "Korat" by the Thai people). In Thailand, the strain is known as Si sawat, meaning "swat seed color". Korat is colloquially known as the "good luck cat". Traditionally, they are served in pairs to newlyweds or people in high esteem, fortunately. Until recently, balls were not sold, but were given only as gifts.
Research has shown that Chartreau may have originated in ancient Persia and came to France with knights returning from the Crusades. These early Chartreaux were a staple in French monasteries and became an important part of a monk's life
.
According to legend, Chartreaux was named after the Carthusian monks who lived with them. The earliest documented history of the Chartreux in France dates back to the early 1500s and is not made from the breed's unique texture and coat colour. The rarity of the Chartreux is highlighted by the average price of a cat, which ranges from $1,000 to $1,500.
The Korat is an ancient breed from Thailand and the earliest known records of the cat are in the Cat Book of Poems or Smud Khoi for Cats, which were written during the Ayodhya period of Siamese history (1350-1767). According to the book, Korat is one of the lucky cats of Thailand.
The balls come in only one color which is described as Silver Blue. Korat is believed to have been first introduced in England in the 19th century, but was introduced as a solid blue Siamese cat. The first known pair of korats in the West was imported to the United States in 1959.
Havana Browns were intentionally developed in the early 1950s in England by a group of British pet fanciers. The group bred Chocolate Point Siamese and Seal Point Black Domestic Shorthair cats to produce a chocolate brown Havana. Early in the breeding programme, Russian blues were introduced to breeding breeds. The Havana Brown was first recognized as an official breed by the Cat Fancy Board of Directors (GCCF) in 1958. Initially, the breed was called the Chestnut Foreign Shorthair and was renamed the Havana Brown in 1970.
In North America, the standard for the Havana Brown breed stuck to the standards of the original Havana brought in in the 1950s. In 1998/1999, North American Havana Brown breeders were allowed to start breeding using unregistered domestic black or blue shorthair, certain eastern shorthair colors, chocolate point or Siamese seal point to increase the cut
ed Havana Brown gene pool.

Burmilla was born in the United Kingdom. Two cats, a Persian chinchilla named Sanquist and a Burmese chinchilla named Faberge, were waiting for a partner of their breed in different rooms. One night, the cleaner left the door open. The two kittens were born, producing four kittens born in 1981; Thus a new breed was born.
In the GCCF (Cat Fancy Board of Directors), burmilla is part of the Asian group. He was accepted into FIFe as Burmilla. Only the silver and silver shaded cultivars in FIFe, CCCA, ACF and CFA were identified as Burmilla. As of late 2011, shaded and golden-shaded Burmilla were also recognized in FIFe. One of Australia's governing bodies has used the name Australian Tiffanie; However, there is no international acceptance and standardization for this breed - the name "Tiffany" has been used to describe many different breeds, which have an appearance from Ragdoll to Birman, and may contain any of these breeds and more. Many Australian Tiffanys in Australia contain more than three-quarters of a Persian chinchilla and retain the look and feel of an old-fashioned Persian chinchilla. Use of the name is in decline due to lax standards for the breed name, lack of unique identity and diverse genetic makeup.
The Burmilla originated in the United Kingdom in 1981 when a Chinchilla Persian male accidentally had kittens with a Lilac Burmese female. The Chinchilla Persian was a purchased by Baroness Miranda Von Kirchberg as a present for her husband. Before the Baroness could have the Chinchilla Persian neutered, he had briefly escaped from the house and impregnated the Lilac Burmese.
The kittens produced by the accidental encounter were so beautiful that a breeding program was established for the newly created Burmillas. The breed is still rare in the United States with very few Burmilla breeders in the country.
All of the cats on the rare cats on this list have unique characteristics and the LaPerm is no exception. LaPerms are known for their very curly fur, which comes in a variety of colors and patterns. The breed’s coats can range from wavy to tight ringlets or long corkscrew curls
.The LaPerm is a Rex breed that originated in the United States and is now found in many other countries around the world. The breed is genetically unique and not related to any other varieties of Rex cats, they have a dominant gene that causes their curly coats. They have an elegant and athletic build and have a passionate, energetic and open personality. They are known for being hypoallergenic cats, which results in a much lower level of allergic response in humans than normal cats. Their highlight is their coat, which consists of soft waves, curls, and curls resembling shaggy curls.
Like a few of the other breeds on this list, the LaPerm was a spontaneous genetic mutation in a regular litter of tabby cats. The first LaPerm kitten was born in 1982 on a farm in Oregon owned by Linda Koehl. Over the next decade, Koehl did not try to selectively breed this unique curly-haired cat but more of them were being born on the farm. Koehl eventually decided to isolate a few of the curly-haired cats and discovered that the curly gene was dominant in both parents. Koehl named the new breed LaPerm after its unique curly/wavy hair.
The Turkish Van is not only one of the rarest cat breeds, it is also one of the most ancient. The breed has existed in the Eastern Anatolia region (modern-day Iraq, Iran, southwest Soviet Union, and eastern Turkey) since at least the Middle Ages. It is believed that the isolation of the breed helped preserve its unique features. Turkish Vans have semi-longhair coats that make them waterproof and they enjoy swimming.
Turkish Vans were first brought to the West in 1955 when two British women, Laura Lushington and Sonia Halliday, were on vacation in Turkey. They brought a male and female kitten back to England and began promoting the Turkish Van as a unique breed. About 100 Turkish Vans a year are registered with the CFA and all registered Turkish Vans can trace their lineage to the original cats brought to England in 1955.
The American Wirehair is a unique breed that began as a random mutation in a litter of six domestic shorthair kittens born on Council Rock Farm in Verona, New York. One of the kittens ended up with a sparse, wiry coat and had crimped whiskers as well. The genetic mutation is so rare that so far it has not occurred naturally in any other country
.
American Wirehairs were first accepted for registration with the CFA in 1967 and every year since then, the breed has appeared at the bottom of the CFA's registration list. The consistently low numbers of American Wirehairs registered makes it the rarest cat breed in the world.
